One of the first and biggest transitions of venturing off into the unknown in life is the changeover from high school to college. Every student is overwhelmed by this, which is normal, but many students going through this change hide and suppress this fear or anxiety. Fear and anxiety can cause a wide range of problems for students, mentally, socially, and academically. College is an exciting time for personal growth, new passions and interests are discovered, friends are made, and everyone is given a fresh start in a way to look at life from a different perspective. The newfound stress of college puts pressure on every student, many of which arrive but do not feel ready to make that transition yet. Many students heading off to college feel scared that things won’t go well, or feel constantly sad because it may seem like the life they have always known is over. Many college students feel very overwhelmed with all of the pressures that seem to be piling up on them including huge expectations of perfection that they have to perform to standards that may be unrealistic or perhaps they aren’t enjoying college and they just want to get out. One third of students in college dropout entirely, and over half take six years to graduate.
College does not determine your worth as a person, even though to a student it can feel like that.
